- Still looking into the storefront of American pop culture from the outside despite the success of fellow Brit-poppers like Starsailor and Travis, Ash continues plugging away on FREE ALL ANGELS, their fourth effort. Casting their fate to the wind, Tim Wheeler and company abandon the electronic nuances that rang throughout their last album NU-CLEAR SOUNDS and instead crank the amps to 11. Despite the decision to thrash their way through ANGELS in a fit of punk-pop-fueled brio, Ashs indelible melodies and sticky hooks remain very much in evidence. Mining the eternal themes of summer fun, this Irish quartet makes like The Undertones on the infectious one-tow punch of "Walking Barefoot" and "Shining Light." Other nuggets of ear-candy include the Jesus And Mary Chain-flavored workout "Cherry Bomb," chugging "Pacific Palisades" and breezy "Sometimes."
- Most ambitious is the lush "Candy," a keyboard drenched love song that shamelessly samples the Walker Brothers cover of Burt Bacharachs "Make It Easy on Yourself." Anglo-philes also benefit from the inclusion of the bonus cut "So The Story Goes," a lolling harmony-fest, enhanced CD ROM and a free DVD available on the limited edition package.
Professional Reviews: Rolling Stone (7/11/02, p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Solid chain-saw fun, some of the best 77 youll hear in 2002."
Entertainment Weekly (8/2/02, p.74) - "...Ash have returned to the clean, uncomplicated sound of their mid-90s debut...borrowing as much from hair metal as from the Ramones..." - Rating: B+
Q (1/03, p.54) - Included in Q Magazines "100 Greatest Albums Ever"
Alternative Press (8/02, p.69) - 8 out of 10 - "...Punchy guitar pop in extremis, sliding so breathlessly from anthemic chorus to soaring hook that its hard to believe any band could actually want to have this much fun and sound this important....Ash have finally turned in the album weve been waiting for since 1977..."
CMJ (7/1/02, p.10) - "...Its emo for sure, seasoned with years of beer-guzzlin, karate-lovin pop-star glory. Dashboard Confessional, meet your match."
