Hervé Jean-Pierre Villechaize(French:[ɛʁvevilʃɛz]; April 23, 1943 – September 4, 1993) was a French actor and painter. He is best known for his roles as the evilhenchmanNick Nack in the 1974James BondfilmThe Man with the Golden Gun, and as Mr. Roarkes assistant, Tattoo, on the American television seriesFantasy Islandthat he played from 1977 to 1983. OnFantasy Island, his shout of "The plane! The plane!" became one of the shows signature phrases.[1]He died by suicide in 1993.
The Man with the Golden Gunis a 1974spy filmand the ninth in theJames Bondseriesproduced byEon Productions, and the second to starRoger Mooreas the fictionalMI6agentJames Bond. A loose adaptation ofIan Flemings posthumously published 1965novel of the same name, the film has Bond sent after the Solex Agitator, a breakthrough technological solution tocontemporary energy shortages, while facing the assassinFrancisco Scaramanga, the "Man with the Golden Gun". The action culminates in a duel between them that settles the fate of the Solex.
The Man with the Golden Gunwas the fourth and final film in the series directed byGuy Hamilton. The script was written byRichard MaibaumandTom Mankiewicz. The film was set in the face of the1973 energy crisis, a dominant theme in the script; Britain had still not yet fully overcome the crisis when the film was released in December 1974. The film also reflects the then-popularmartial arts filmcraze, with severalkung fuscenes and a predominantly Asian location, being set and shot inThailand,Hong Kong, andMacau. Part of the film is also set inBeirut, Lebanon, but it was not shot there.
The film was met with mixed reviews, and some critics described it as the lowest point in the canon up to that time.Christopher Lees portrayal of Scaramanga as a villain of similar skill and ability to Bond was praised, but reviewers criticised the film as a whole, particularly its comedic approach and the performances of Moore andBritt Ekland. Whilst profitable, the film is the fourth lowest-grossing in the series, and its relatively modest returns by comparison with those ofLive and Let Die(1973) reportedly placed the continuation of the franchise in jeopardy.[3]It was the last Bond film to be co-produced byAlbert R. BroccoliandHarry Saltzman, with Saltzman selling his 50% stake inDanjaq, LLC, the parent company of Eon Productions, after the release of the film.
